Seminar 5 Reflection (When in Rome, do as the Romans do)

In this seminar, we discussed the quote โ€œWhen in Rome, do as the Romans doโ€โ€”whether travelers should adapt to local customs or stay true to their own values. Some people felt that following traditions shows respect, while others believed itโ€™s okay to set boundaries if certain practices conflict with personal beliefs.

One example is the French custom of la biseโ€”greeting others with a kiss on both cheeks. While this is normal in France, some travelers might find it awkward or too personal. From a health perspective, it can also increase the risk of spreading illness. Situations like this show that there isnโ€™t a simple right or wrong answer.

The discussion reminded me that being thoughtful and aware matters more than simply blending in, and it made me reflect on how I would navigate cultural differences while traveling.
