Chapter 1
As night fell slowly, the noisy city finally fell quiet. Leaning against the floor-to-ceiling windows in a high-rise apartment, Serena flipped through a little-known sci-fi fantasy novel, with soft night breeze blowing at the curtains. The soft lamplight fell on the book cover, printed with its title “Meyer city crisis” “Everyone awakens superpowers, and social status is decided by ability levels,” Serena read softly from the title page, sounding a sigh of emotion. Her friends sat by her happily listening to what she was saying. In Meyer City, far away from here, social rules were plain and cruel. Everyone is born with a special ability. Some can control wind and thunder, some had hard strong senses, and some are extremely fast in running. People’s social status and future are measured by how strong and useful their powers are, and all in all, a strict hierarchical system is formed. Serena leaned against the window and spoke with deep sigh of emotion, “The saddest part of this story is this special girl – Malia.”
Malia was the only special existence, even a laughingstock to this world. Her superpower was the most worthless one in the whole world, she could only change the color of her hair, that’s all. This ability could neither attack, nor defend. It was totally useless in fighting or in daily life. She could change her black hair to any colour, but this meaningless power was meaningless to this world, where strength could rule everything.
“She lived at the bottom of society all her life, ignored and abandoned,” Stella whispered sadly. “She did nothing wrong, yet she was abandoned by the whole world just because her power was useless.” “What makes it even sadder,” Serena closed the book with calm eyes, “is that she never went crazy or complained. Years of neglect and indifference wore away all her feelings. Her silent suffering is far more heartbreaking than revenge and rage.”They chatted deep into the night, feeling sorry for Malia’s sad fate. None of them knew this casual talk would become a sign leading them to another world…
Chapter 2
The next afternoon, the weather was bright and warm. Serena, Alice, Stella, Amber, Claire, Iris and Mia went to the vintage city planetarium together.Walking inside the quiet star exhibition hall, they watched the simulated starry sky and cosmic research displays, talking about alien civilizations and the evolution of superpowers.
“Do you think superpowers follow certain rules of development?” Amber looked up at the shining starry sky and asked softly.
“I think superpowers are formed by cosmic energy,” Claire answered seriously. “Living environment, genes and world rules can all change people’s abilities.”
Soon, their talk returned to the book they read the night before.Serena touched her phone and looked confused, “There’s always a mystery about this book that the author never explained.”
“What mystery?” Iris asked at once.
“Later in the story, Malia suddenly became the strongest person who could even shake the whole city. No one knows where her great power came from. Her original power was totally useless, so her sudden rise just doesn’t make sense.”
The moment she finished her words, a faint buzzing sound rang out.A harsh white light burst out suddenly from the phone, instantly covering the whole hall. Strong pulling force dragged all seven of them away from their original world.
Chapter 3
When they opened their eyes again, they found themselves in Meyer City, a futuristic cyberpunk city filled with colorful neon lights and flying cars.The rules of this strange world changed their bodies and gave them new powers. Everyone gained powerful practical abilities, including high-speed movement, energy control, object transformation, emotional sensing and crowd evacuation.They all got the power to survive in this cruel world, except Serena. She felt no special power flowing inside her body and frowned tightly.”I don’t have any fighting power,” she said in a low voice.
Her friends looked at her in surprise.
“Then what did you get?” Stella asked quickly.
“I still keep all the memories of our original world,” Serena stared at the sky seriously. “Besides, I can predict what will happen in this different world…”
Right then, strange energy fluctuations appeared in the sky above Meyer City. Blue lightning flashed among the dark clouds, and the strong magnetic field made everyone feel breathless. They all looked towards the top of the museum not far away.Malia stood there quietly, surrounded by restless blue electric currents. Her long black hair floated freely in the air without any wind.The hidden truth of the story was finally revealed.
“So she never wanted to take revenge,” someone murmured softly.
People used to guess she would fight back and go wild, but all those thoughts were wrong. The truth was far crueler than revenge.It turned out that it was not local people in Meyer City that noticed Malia, but highly developed alien civilizations far away in space. Alien exploration fleets had been observing Meyer City for a long time. They found a huge secret: almost everyone in this world had useful and controllable superpowers, except Malia.Her hair-color-changing ability was a special gene power with no fixed rules or limits, making her the only special loophole in this world.The aliens did not come to invite her or make friends with her. They only wanted to use her for cruel space experiments.
Soon, several silver alien spaceships appeared in the sky. An alien messenger in silver protective clothes slowly landed in front of Malia.
His voice was cold and emotionless. “Special human being Malia of Meyer City.”He held out a light blue glowing potion in his palm. “This potion can completely change the gene structure of your hair.”
Malia raised her head slowly, her eyes filled with endless numbness, and asked quietly, “What will happen after the change?”
“Your useless hair-color power will turn into powerful electromagnetic field control and free object transformation ability,” the alien replied coldly.
Everyone watching from a distance was totally shocked. This ordinary girl at the bottom could become the most powerful person in the whole city overnight.Serena knew the hidden danger from her memories and shouted anxiously from far away, “Malia, don’t drink it! There is a trick!”
Malia heard the faint warning voice, but she just smiled faintly with a sense of relief.The alien told her the cruel price plainly. “After the transformation, your emotions and magnetic field will no longer be controlled by yourself.” “You will own great power, but lose control of yourself forever. Your strength will never belong to you.” She had lived in neglect and loneliness for too long. Having nothing to lose, Malia reached out and took the potion without any hesitation. “I’ll drink it.”Then, she raised her head and drank it all in one gulp.
In an instant, great changes took place on her body. All her soft black hair turned into tough electric hair that could conduct electricity, stretch freely and attract all magnetic objects. Her hair connected closely with the city’s power system, air particles and all magnetic fields around. Green electric currents flowed through her hair, forming huge energy storms in the sky.
The aliens watched her silently with cold eyes, waiting for her to lose control and destroy the city. All they wanted was to collect enough experimental data of different world power changes….
