Ok everyone so, like, would you eat a cow if you met the cow before it died?
Essentially this is something that occurs in the Restaurant at the End of the Universe in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. In the book there is a cow that can talk, wants to be eaten, and recommends to the guests what cuts of meat from the cow are best, and then kills itself for food for the guests. The paradoxical part of this is that a character, Arthur, is perfectly fine eating normal cows (cows that don’t want to be eaten) but won’t eat a cow that wants to be eaten.
Why I would eat a cow that does not want to be eaten, but not a cow that wants to be eaten (in the Hitchhiker’s Guide example):
The talking cow creates a personal relationship. A non-speaking cow remains an abstract food item. A cow that introduces itself, makes conversation, and jokes about its own meat forces a direct social interaction. That social bond is precisely why we don’t eat pets—we know them as individuals. (hence the title meeting the cow)
Consent becomes unsettling rather than reassuring. When an animal cannot speak, we assume its silence implies no relationship with us. But a talking cow that willingly offers its own flesh breaks the normal predator-prey dynamic. Its consent feels less like a solution and more like a disturbing performance, as if the cow has been manipulated into endorsing its own death.
The willing cow mimics a human decision. A resisting cow behaves like an animal. A consenting cow behaves like a person making a tragic, absurd choice. Eating a person—even a willing one—violates a deeper taboo than eating a reluctant animal.
It’s similar to why we eat cows but not dogs. We don’t eat dogs not because dogs are inedible, but because we have a social and emotional connection to them. The talking cow, by speaking and engaging with you, creates that same kind of bond. Once that connection exists, eating the animal feels wrong—regardless of whether it says it wants to be eaten.
