The Orang Minyak, or “Oily Man” is a creature from Malaysian folklore. He is said to be a man that is covered in black petroleum oil who sneaks into homes at dawn to kidnap young women and do “interesting stuff”* . In some stories, he gets his powers by making a deal with evil forces. The oil on his body makes him hard to catch and shows that he has lost his humanity.
This legend can teach us a lesson about sustainability. The oil coating that the Orang Minyak lathers on himself could represent pollution, especially from things like gas and oil. It shows what happens when people harm the Earth to get more power or money. The Orang Minyak used unnatural powers and became dangerous, just like how using too many natural resources without care can harm the animal biodiversity and humans
In this way, the story of the Orang Minyak reminds us that we need to take care of the environment. If we do not, we may face serious problems living in the future. Living in a way that respects nature and uses resources wisely is how we can keep the world safe and healthy for us and even the future generations to come.
* : Added by Andrew, this part originally said “kidnap then r*** young women”
Tryna test how comments work so yeah
“interesting stuff” nah nah nah 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁
good thing I only go to my home country once a year 🙁
though its just a myth
Ignore the first 2 words on the constructive feedback post/comment. That was sarcasm but Mushroom won’t let me edit it for some reason.
Not that appropriate
Very appropriate but at least it has good information, Could add connections to globalisation and sustainability but this is already very good if we ignore the adult content
Thanks to Andrew for editing the original work to make it more palatable for our younger readers 👍
Thanks to @ STRATEGISE THEN TACTICALLY INVADE for adding yet another interesting myth to our archive and managing to connect to our theme of sustainability 🙂
I think there’d also be scope to connect this to SDGs – I believe #5 is Gender Equality, and this Orang Minyak is obviously hindering advancement of that SDG.
