Exotic Poetry Type Sharing: Terza rima

I love poetry. Here’s a not well known type of poetry I want to share. Terza rima is a form of poetry composed of tercets (3-line stanzas) with an interlocking rhyme scheme. It was invented by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri and famously used in his Divine Comedy.

So, it is famous for its peculiar rhyme scheme. The 1st line & 3rd line rhymes. The second line rhymes with the 1st line of the next tercet. Like this:

ABA

BCB

CDC

DED

And so on. So you can technically create a never ending poem if you want. However, if you want a end, you will end with a rhyming couplet that rhymes with the second line in the last paragraph. Also, it is traditionally written in iambic pentameter in English, but its not really always.

Here’s a example:

In silver can, a bubbling storm ignites, (A)
A hiss, a fizz, the sound of sweet delight, (B)
It lifts the weary soul to sugared heights. (A)

No calories to haunt the sleep at night, (B)
Yet flavor bold as thunder in the skies, (C)
A rebelโ€™s drink that feels exactly right. (B)

Its chill awakens fire behind the eyes, (C)
A sharper edge than coffee ever brewed, (D)
With every sip, the sluggish spirit flies. (C)

A nectar not by nature, but construed, (D)
To mimic joy with chemicals so sly, (E)
Still every drop improves the drinkerโ€™s mood. (D)

So raise a can beneath the open sky,(E)
For Diet Pepsiโ€™s buzz will never die.(E)

Yay
