In this seminar, we discussed the quote “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”—whether travelers should adapt to local customs or stay true to their own values. Some people felt that following traditions shows respect, while others believed it’s okay to set boundaries if certain practices conflict with personal beliefs.
One example is the French custom of la bise—greeting others with a kiss on both cheeks. While this is normal in France, some travelers might find it awkward or too personal. From a health perspective, it can also increase the risk of spreading illness. Situations like this show that there isn’t a simple right or wrong answer.
The discussion reminded me that being thoughtful and aware matters more than simply blending in, and it made me reflect on how I would navigate cultural differences while traveling.
You could have mentioned how your classmate experienced ‘la bise’ and reported that she felt violated. In the UK we traditionally value personal space, yet many celebrities do ‘la bise’ so it is surprisingly common even in distant UK.
