The Game That Knew

Steve brought over a new video game, “Shadow Realms,” he’d found at a garage sale. The case was blank except for the title. When they started it up, the pixelated characters on the screen looked strangely familiar. “That one kind of looks like you,” Tank laughed, pointing. As they played, the game became eerily accurate. It showed a path through the woods behind Steve’s house that only they knew about, and then a puzzle involving the exact combination of rocks they used to mark their secret fort.

The game characters arrived at a door hidden behind a waterfall—a place they had just discovered last week. On the screen, the door swung open. At that exact moment, from Tank’s open bedroom window, they both heard a distant, real-life creak coming from the direction of the woods. The controller fell from Steve’s hands. The game wasn’t just showing their memories; it was one step ahead of them.

PS I DON’T PLAY VIDEO GAMES
