So I knew of this game called cyberpunk 2077 for a long time and I just suddenly thought of it and decided to write a blog about cyberware and human modification(which is bio-engineering).
WARNING – Most of this blog will be writing from a sci-fi point of view.
So firstly, what is cyberware exactly?
Cyberware or Cybernetics are non-organic components that can be connected to the human body(Or in a sense, installed) that is able to extend the capabilities of an individual. Normally it will be connected to the individuals nervous system, serving as a extension of the human body as well. A good example of cyberware can be a prosthetic arm, boosting its capabilities such as lifting heavy objects. Another example can be a smart lens, enhancing an individual’s visual capabilities. In fact cyberware do exist, albeit very expensive(Artificial limbs for disabled veterans,
But what is bio-engineering?
Bio-engineering is about modifing the human body through organic methods, most of the time it is depicted as modifiying the DNA of an individual. And in fact it is actually already doable now. There is this technology called “CRISPER” where we just hijack a bacteria’s virus defense mechanisms and use it to modify our own DNA. Idk if it was used on this specific case, because in china there were these two twins of sister that actually have there DNA modified. And the scientist that modified their genes got gaslighted into jail. Because of ethical reasons and scientifically reasons.
So now we get to the real s***.
lettuce b gin.
First start of with the scientifically reasons.
I’ll start with bio-engineering.
It’s actually really reasonable. If we modified our genes, first it would reproduction come with unforeseen consequences.(Since your genes aren’t “pure”) Second with the consequences, if people continue to reproduce then these consequences will naturally “pollute” the gene pool of humanity. And the consequences and be everything really. Disabling the immune system? Sure. Making people required millions of calories per day. Umm sure? Anything bad really. And the worst problems are the “timed bombs” problems that dont appear immediately and takes everyone by storm. And yeah that’s why the scientist was gaslighted into jail.
Next for cyberware.
I found a lot of reasons for problems with cyberware through the game that sparked my thought.
- People can hack cyberware(cause its digital) and controll you
- People can literally fry your brain
- The more cyberware you have, the less flesh you have in your body and the less humantiy their is you(basicly if you modify yourself too much, will you still be you?)
- If their is a probelm with the software running the cyberware, all people who have implants will be effected.
- Also makes superpowers readily availible to you(As long you have the money)
Next up for the ethical reasons for both augments
If people actually have these augments, rifts in social society will quickly appear, their would very likely be a conflict between the un-modified and the modfied.
Augments can also be another way for corporations, regimes to control people.
It would just make conflicts even more devastating
People would likely detach from physical things, since they are now much more resiliant.
Why isnt it plausible?
- Previous exposed problems
- Huge need in funding
- Needs a HUGE upfront effort to make the production chains of cyberware to mature and make it availible
- It can also be marked as dangerous and banned, or reduced(Like the case with nuclear bombs)
But are their any benifits?
- We can make humanity acceleate in progress
- Makes the momentum of people’s lives faster
- Augment people’s abilities to do all sorts of good stuff
- Acts a gataway for reasearch in consience, bio-engineering, memories, and the essence of why you are you!
human-augmentation is a doule-edged sword.
Its a portal to endless possiblies and also endless disaster.
Wether it’s good or not.
Its your turn to think
Another ethical concern is when procedures such as CRISPR is used to genetically modify babies, the “Desgigner babies” could appear. Babies that would be genetically selected for intteligence, eye color, atheletism, etc.
I just remembered one of my early experiences with an AI image creator attempting to make a kind of cyborg:
Wow! I find this stuff really interesting. When I was your age, I hoped to be a cyberpunk one day 😅
My G8 class are going to be doing their next unit on sci-fi so I think I’ll add your post to their reading list 👍👍
Would you consider adding a ‘featured image’ (works as a sort of book cover for the post) to this post? It might attract more readers
Have you seen that biohacker guy who gives people horns? I’m not sure what the point of that is, just cosmetic I suppose, but it sure looks interesting.
Finally, I will add your game inspiration to a list of futuristic visions in art that I built for a project on Mushroom a few years ago. It’s really rewarding when students share stuff for the benefit of their peers and others. Keep up the good work👍👍
