The Tale of Sedna
In Inuit mythology, Sedna was a young woman. She and her father were in the middle of the sea. Before long, Sedna and her father were in the middle of a storm as well. The boat was crashing and swaying, and her father threw her off the boat to escape the storm. Sedna refused to leave, she clung to the boat with such grip that her father had no choice but to cut off her fingers. She sank to the bottom of the ocean, and on the sea floor, her fingers became seals, whales, and other sea creatures. Sedna controls the sea animals, and hunters searching for them must appease her by tending to her hair, or she will not make he animals available anymore.
Sustainability: In “The Tale of Sedna”, the Inuit people show deep respect for the natural world. Sedna is believed to control the animals in the sea, which are important for the Inuit’s survival. This reflects the sustainable of natural resources. The Inuit”s recognition of Sedna’s power reminds them to take only what is really needed from the ocean, ensuring the long term availability of resources, which is in line with the concept of the sustainable use of natural resources. The story has been passed down from generations, maintaining the Inuit cultural identity. In this process, the Inuit gather together, strengthening social bonds. This enables them to address environmental challenges and sharing ideas. This is also a kind of sustainability. A strong cultural identity helps communities stay connected to their roots and make decisions that are consistent with their values. For the Inuit, the story of Sedna influences their attitudes towards the environment and guides their behaviors, contributing to the sustainable development of their community in a cultural and ecological sense.
Globalization: Environmental messages in “Tale of Sedna”, such as the importance of maintaining the balance of the ocean, are becoming more relevant in the context of globalization. As the environmental issues become global concerns, the story can serve as a reminder to people around the world to respect and protect the natural environment .
Good work: A clear summary and clear, detailed connections to both sustainability and globalization 🙂
