A hitchhiker’s guide to the caviar

Caviar is one of the food that I find most puzzling and confusing of. It has this complicated taste and texture (which I will explain later) that I find complicated. 😵‍💫

Before sharing my personal thoughts, let’s go through some basic info about caviar. According to Bing, Caviar is a delicacy consisting of salt-cured roe from sturgeon fish, primarily found in the Caspian and Black Sea regions. Traditionally, the term refers specifically to roe from wild sturgeon species such as beluga, ossetra, and sevruga. [Author’s note: The caviar title is reserved only for sturgeon eggs. Other fish eggs (like salmon or trout) are just “roe,” which is basically a less fancy version of caviar, although I think they taste like the same thing☹️. ]

Caviar is known for its UNIQUE taste and texture(true😅), and it is often eaten as a garnish (which works like a tiny mint leaf over desserts) or spread. It is considered a luxury food item due to its rarity and the complex process of harvesting and processing the roe. It is also a symbol of the rich, in which many billionaires purchase it to showcase their social/economical status. 🤑

Now back my personal views on caviar, which I’ve stated in the beginning– I find the taste of caviar ABSOLUTELY PUZZLING. Moreover, I also find the act of spending sooo much money on something that tastes weird ABSOLUTELY PUZZLING.😰 I’ve tasted bits of caviar on multiple occasions, and I only ate it out of pure curiosity. It tastes like salt water wrapped in an edible bubble. I don’t suggest spending a month’s salary on a small tin box of caviar, but it’s worthy to try out something so unique and special. (It’s likely that you might not taste it for the second time, so cherish your once in a lifetime chance for being rich. Maybe you’ll taste it in the future again if you’re hard working enough, although I see no reason in buying it, rich or not. 😋)

In conclusion:

Should you try out caviar if you get the chance to? absolutely.

Will you love it? Maybe.

Will you regret spending that much money on fish eggs? Definitely.

But hey, at least now you know WHY rich people lose their minds over salty fish eggs.

  1. I know how you feel. I have the exact same feeling as you describe. I’d simply assumed that the caviar I tried must have been too cheap or something but I find it unlikely. I guess it is one of those strange occurrences where the cost of the status far outweighs the value of the experience – kind of like much of the fashion industry.

I recommend a vaguely related specialty called ‘Gentleman’s Relish’. It sounds posh like caviar but is actually anchovy paste and you can spread it on toast – delicious! Make sure you spread it very thinly because it is very, very salty.
