In response to: “Why might there be more than one ‘correct’ way to speak English?”

Through globalization,English spread its seed over continents.But there is different ways to speak English, to spell words.There are two main reasons we’re included during formation of English in the mid-ages and colonization of the British empire in the 18 centuries. These two reasons cause the difference of English between different classes and regions.

In Middle Ages, ruling class of the British land changed between the Vikings, French, German, and Native British. The foreign rulers bring words from their origin language to express their superior or new meanings the old English didn’t have. But the lower classes didn’t get to learn those advanced words spoke by the rulers, they developed their own words to express similar meanings which made a single object two different words and expressions. Through the development of British society, these words widely circulated in to the groups of English speakers, and made  environment where both expressions are correct and applicable.

The British empire start their colonization in the 18 century, transferring goods and slaves over the continents. To make their rule more successful and convenient, they thought the native people their mother language-English for communication and commands. Instead of making the native an expert English user, they only thought them several basic words and expressions for the native and slaves to understand words and commands. With no choice, the natives choose to build their own words to communicate with the British of unfamiliar objects and local specialists, which the British had their own words but they didn’t thought the foreigners about.

The formation of American English was an exception, they had their own expressions and grammar beside the British English. It is because the foreign words the immigrants brought to America, these words might mean similar with the British words, but rapidly used by the Americans. The main reason was the spelling reform, it made a great amount of new pronunciation for the old English.

In conclusion, the reform of English were mainly caused by the expansion of British empire that brought different region and classes their own way to express and communicate. The complexed history of English also refers to the development of English society.
