When Dr.Terrett first told us about the word “dark tourism”, it seems to me as if it is directly related to the hot war battlefields of gunpowder and corpses. Unluckily it’s not, but coincidentally I had experienced tons of dark travels before.
The concept of dark travel is when people travel to places which are remains of a deep past/histories. Bombed infrastructures such as orphanages and hospitals are typical examples of dark tourism, but others more rarely seen include cemetery tours and wasted harbor sightings.
Except for the sites itself, the people who lived in the area and died are more fascinating to me. When I once got to Nanjing city and saw the pictures of orphans and people crying alone helpless, it often reminds me of the similar pictures I saw in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Comparing the different injuries and how the people were suffocating to death is such and intriguing part of dark tourism that you cannot ignore.
Also, dark tourism in general can help people understand more of the history behind its ruins, which reveals the humanitarian tragedies and how conflicts between countries influence personal well-being.
PS: PLEASE don’t cry when you see people dying in creative ways which troops experimented (in the case 731)💗. Its disrespectful, annoying, and dissipating.
