Compare to seminar 1, what we said or what the topic/questions we discussed are more deeply this time. Therefore, this made students to think more deeply and critically. In this seminar, we had a discussion about cultural shock or for example what should we do in a new country and dark tourism.
The first part (cultural shock) really amazed me, because we discussed nearly 35 minutes on the first question. Everyone is crazy, more outspoken than last time and more people participated in the discussion. The question is “When we live in a new country, should we adapt its culture?” Some people think it is a good idea to broaden their horizen, learn new things and fit the country because you have to live in there. However, some think that you have to first identify whether this type of culture fits you or not (do you like it). I align myself to the opinion that you first have to like it, then learn it, adapt it. The best way people usually do is to first keep the way you live before, then try to make some local friends, this could help you better get into the society and you could learn more about here’s culture through actions from local residents. I speak quite a lot and also add to others’ points. However, my grade isn’t very high and isn’t what I am expected for. One of the reason might be there are too many people speaking so many ideas were already mentioned.
The second part with the dark tourism I am the host, together with Toby. Unexpectable, Toby had a great preparation and he did a good job so I suddenly felt shy. Therefore, I did not speak much. I felt really bad immediately after the class ends. I only helped a little, which includes closing the door when its too noisy, asking/finding if there were people want to answer the questions and telling people to be quiet.
I want to do better next time. Maybe bring out more confidence (I don’t know why I just suddenly forgot what to say when I am expressing my idea… that’s terrible). Also, I have to develop my knowledge about dark tourisms because there are many examples of dark tourisims that I did not know. In short, do more preparation.
A useful reflection. So, would you like to try leading again for our final seminar?
There are a few language errors but mostly minor. This usage is odd though: ” learn more about here’s culture” Using ‘here’ like this is Chinglish. Better express it something like: “learn more about the culture of that place”.
