🛠️ The Mushroom Platform: Major Summer Upgrade Release Notes
The fixed and massively upgraded Mushroom platform is finally ready for deployment! Here is the unified list of main changes, upgrades, and fixes implemented during this summer’s development cycle:
1. Blog & Content Displays
-
Unified Visual Displays: Refactored carousels, grids, cards, and compact lists across the site (student blogs, series, collections) into a consistent layout system with standardized thumbnails, hover animations, typography, and card spacing.
-
Expanded Tool Utility: Upgraded site shortcodes to make post components—such as action buttons and interactive listings—usable across any standard page or post rather than restricting them to specific custom areas.
-
Navigation & Pagination: Added left/right navigation arrows to carousel listings for non-touch screens and streamlined page numbers under long lists for smoother pagination.
-
Grouped Author Posts: Student posts are now grouped under a “More from this author” dropdown that dynamically displays their latest posts on click, preventing a single prolific student from dominating the recent posts list.
-
Fixed Notifications: Visual improvements to the notification system make it much more user-friendly and ready too build more features.
-
Pop-up Profile Badge: Added a pop-up badge for quick profile checks without having to transition to the full profile page.
2. RPG & Gamification Engine
-
Fixed Reward Limits & Daily Caps: Strictly enforced a daily XP earning limit per student, a maximum of 3 XP-awarding buttons per page, and a one-shot (single-use) policy per reward button that persists across page reloads.
-
Button Cooldowns & Anti-Cheating: Buttons briefly disable immediately after being clicked. Resolved a background “pass-through” communication loophole where points were granted even after limit messages were displayed.
-
Improved System Error Handling: Whenever a reward limit is reached, the server immediately halts processing and notifies the user.
-
Unified Visual Feedback: Enhanced on-screen pop-ups so students receive instant, clear updates about earned XP, lost lives, or reached limits without unexpected page redirects.
-
Flexible Mission Complete Buttons: Added single-action buttons capable of awarding XP, XP + lives, or lives only, accompanied by a tidy confirmation dialog.
3. Zombie & Purgatory System
-
Removed Third Party Apps: The previous third party app responsible for the quiz has been stripped out entirely and replaced with a custom Quiz Gate feature (see below).
-
Escaping Purgatory: Students who lose all lives are redirected to a themed purgatory scenario. Completing a quiz allows them to restore 3 lives via a dedicated green “ESCAPE PURGATORY” button.
-
Repeatable Recovery: The recovery mechanism works every time a student becomes a zombie, ensuring no student is permanently locked out of participating.
4. Custom Editor & Content Authoring
-
Editor Overhaul: Constructed a brand new custom post editor for smoother handling of HTML source viewing, media embedding, links, and interactive elements. This now provides a solid platform for future additional features.
-
Cursor-Exact Placement: XP buttons, quiz gates, and interactive widgets now insert precisely where your cursor is positioned, making nested content (e.g., buttons inside quiz blocks) simple to construct.
-
Live Quiz Gates: Teachers can build customized quizzes and embed them directly into scenarios for student completion.
-
Visual Badges: Interactive elements are output into the editor as user-friendly visual badges to help non-coders create RPG scenarios. (This was a lot of work, but worth it!)
5. User Authentication & Admin Management
-
Custom Login & Redirection: Moved the login page to a dedicated address for added privacy. Implemented smart redirects that return users to their previous page upon login and show a “See you next time” page upon logout.
-
Tidier Admin Hub: Consolidated admin instructions, groups management, and the RPG Creator Centre into a unified more user-friendly card-style dashboard with direct shortcuts to front-end pages. This is now ready to build an internal ‘how to’ wiki of instructions for the RPG Creator Centre.
6. Core Infrastructure & Performance Optimization
-
Site Performance & Stability: Diagnosed and resolved background session and security token timeouts (AJAX requests) to ensure faster page loads and eliminate admin disconnects.
-
Legacy Code Cleanup: Stripped out outdated CSS rules, deprecated styling hooks, and duplicated code to prevent conflicts and keep site maintenance lightweight.
-
Portable Architecture & Deployment: Standardized shared helper functions and portable settings, allowing the platform to transition smoothly from the test site to the live production server without code modifications.
Of course, with such a big upgrade, we can expect some teething problems and no doubt a whole load of bugs that I didn’t find during testing. So, up to you guys to let me know any problems you encounter (it’ll likely be very slow to begin with as everything gets loaded into the browser, don’t bother reporting that 😉 ).
