“When in Rome do as the Romans do” is a pretty old quote that has been going on for decades, and I believe the quote is theoretically correct under the following terms:
1. Local traditions doesn’t violate or goes against your own belief and values
You shouldn’t feel forced to do something that clashes with your personal or cultural identity.
2. Local traditions support universal human values
Traditions that respect for example fairness, and equity are worth observing and learning form
3. Show love in culture in a respectful way
It isn’t about completely copying, but about genuinely appreciating and understanding the meaning behind the local traditions.
4. You take time to understand the actual meaning behind those local traditions
Rather than just following without thinking, it’s important to learn why people do things a certain way—it shows respect and avoids misunderstandings.
‘going for decades’! I think you could use ‘centuries’.
A nice approach to your reflection, but did your advice stand up to the scrutiny of your classmates in the seminar?
