This week we discussed the famous saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” This sparked a lively debate about whether travelers should always follow local customs or if it’s okay to stick to their own ways.
Some students argued that respecting traditions is important because it shows kindness to the host culture. They gave examples like removing shoes/wearing or taking off specific clothing before entering a mosque or dressing modestly in religious places. Others disagreed, saying that not all customs may align with a traveler’s personal beliefs, and it’s okay to politely decline certain practices.
What I learned is that there isn’t only one right answer—it depends on the situation. Being open-minded and considerate matters more than blindly following every tradition. Next time, I might try to prepare more examples.
Overall, it was a thought-provoking seminar, and I enjoyed hearing different viewpoints. It made me realize that traveling isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s also about learning how to respect others while staying true to yourself. 🙂
Nice! Remember that ‘it depends’ as you go through high school and university 😉
A clearer or more attractive title would be better.
