My seminar reflection:)

On May 6th, Serena and I led a seminar discussion about travel. (I had no idea I was going to be a host in my ELL academic career… thanks Serena. 😭) Even though I did not speak as much as others (especially my partner, whose level of engagement is astonishing), I contributed to this seminar by coming up with the questions and interesting pictures to discuss (I feel like a mastermind, which is super cool🤓). It was interesting to hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions on why people travel, the importance of travel, and some challenges travelers might face.

Many students shared personal stories about trips they had taken, which made the discussion engaging. There were also several debates and rebuttals, which made this seminar rather more interesting than usual😌. A few classmates mentioned how travel helps people learn about different cultures, which I personally think is the most essential and enjoyable aspect when traveling. 🥳

We as hosts had to make sure everyone had a chance to contribute, and thanks to Serena by coming up with the 3 chance idea, it’s implemented! This way of management for the seminar balances the amount of speech, manages time for each participant, and gave students equal chances to speak, which is needed and suitable. 🤩

One challenge throughout the seminar was keeping the conversation focused, as some students went off topic, but Serena GENTLY REMINDED them to connect their ideas back to travel. But otherwise, honestly this seminar was amazing! 🥲

Overall, I enjoyed leading this seminar because it allowed me to hear different perspectives on travel, and I also got to experience the host’s role in a class seminar (exciting… ). It also helped me improve my skills in guiding discussions without dominating them. Next time, I might try to contribute more of my own thoughts while still making sure everyone else feels included. (Key note to myself and to everyone who’s not been a seminar host yet: Don’t stand there in the front like a stump. 😞)
