I am frequently asked how to get a better band score in IELTS Writing. Well, I have two main pieces of advice:
1. Read and understand the Band Descriptors. The Band Descriptors are what IELTS Examiners use to rate the completed test papers (in other words, that is how your writing will be assessed). The buttons below will take you to the public versions of the band descriptors in English:

2. Read a lot of English articles on the main topics that come up in the IELTS test (see the end of our article on Writing Task 2 for a list of recommended topics). If you are aiming beyond band 6, there is no secret test strategy to help you ‘cheat’. The only way is to actually learn English to the level of your target IELTS band 🙂
