Exotic Food–Fried Frogs

We’re often encouraged to step outside our comfort zones and explore the vast, irresistible world of exotic cuisines. However, when it comes to certain dishes, like fried frogs, the initial reaction from many is pure disgust. “How could anyone possibly eat that?” I wondered. The first time I saw this dish was at a hot pot store. My nose wrinkled at the very thought of consuming an amphibious creature. And that’s exactly why some people instantly think the dish is exotic once they saw it: Just the thought of eating frogs is simply too strange and unsettling to stomach. Frogs are typically thought of as slimy, croaking creatures – not food. The mental leap required to view them as a culinary ingredient can be a major psychological barrier.

Before you write off fried frogs as a culinary abomination, I urge you to take a step back and reconsider your stance. There’s far more to this dish than meets the eye – and judging it solely on appearance alone means missing out on a truly remarkable gastronomic experience. The visual aspect of fried frogs is undoubtedly unusual, with their bulging eyes and distinctly amphibious features. This can understandably be off-putting, especially for those of us accustomed to more conventional protein sources. The dish can also be enough to turn some people’s stomachs.

I haven’t tried any versions of fried frogs before, and I highly recommend that you SHOUDN’T TRY IT, because the dish itself, is just pure disgust. (To me, ofc.)

  1. Very well expressed! I’m assuming you did some research to write such a sustained onslaught of idiomatic collocations!

I was looking forward to your description of the fried frogs so I must admit that the ending is a bit disappointing. I’m sure you could’ve gone to a fried frog restaurant and done a little tasting research just to give your readers a satisfying ending?

Incidentally, frog hotpot was quite common when I lived in Sichuan. I didn’t like it myself – the meat is all sort of flubbery when hotpotted and the chefs’ butchery skills aren’t so skilled at removing bone fragments. I think they’re better fried (just my opinion of course).

Also, I ought to add that frog’s legs is a famous dish in French cuisine.
