Exotic Food

How I fell in love with tinky tofu

As a foodie, I tried a highly controversial dish a few years ago(but not exactly exotic)—stinky tofu. I first tried it  at a snack street very close to my home. That day, while shopping with my mom, a peculiar smell caught my attention. “What’s that smell?”I asked, wrinkling my nose. “Stinky tofu!”Mom laughed, pulling me toward the stall. “Smells strong, but it’s super delicious!”

The frying blocks of dark, uneven tofu was bubbling in an oily pan. The tofu didn’t look particularly appealing—its surface was rough and, sizzling and puffing up like little balloons.

“Wanna try some?”the man selling the tofu asked.

I hesitated. The odor was intense. But seeing Mom’s encouraging smile, I nodded.

When the tofu was handed to me, the pungent aroma rushed up my nose. I took a small bite—only to be surprised by the crispy outer layer giving way to a soft, pudding-like center. It actually tasted nothing like it smelled. Instead, it had a rich taste that grew more satisfying with each bite.

“So?” Mom asked.

I took another, bigger bite. Nodding eagerly, I did a thumbs up with my mouth full.

Now, I’ve grown to love this stinky delicacy. It taught me that some things can’t be judged by appearance or smell alone. If you enjoy trying new foods, dare to take a bite—you might fall for its quirky charm too! 😉
