Peace

Now, God be thanked who has matched us with his hour,
      And caught our youth, and wakened us from sleeping!
With hand made sure, clear eye, and sharpened power,
      To turn, as swimmers into cleanness leaping,
Glad from a world grown old and cold and weary;
      Leave the sick hearts that honor could not move,
And half-men, and their dirty songs and dreary,
      And all the little emptiness of love!
Oh! we, who have known shame, we have found release there,
      Where there’s no ill, no grief, but sleep has mending,
            Naught broken save this body, lost but breath;
Nothing to shake the laughing heart’s long peace there,
      But only agony, and that has ending;
            And the worst friend and enemy is but Death.
This is a poem by RUPERT BROOKE, he is very handsome, talented and charming, but he is only 27 when he died, the most famous poem he wrote is “The Dead”.
The whole poem has only one stanza, but it could be separated by sentences. The whole poem is expressing the emotion.
The first sentence is a thank to the god to born him in the specific moment so he could go through all of the events that makes him write this poem.
The second sentence have the spirit of the poem, because it’s the very start of the war, people didn’t realize how ruthless and horrible the war would be, so they think it’s finally the way to pay back for there country, including the author, and I think the author added “peace” for the title because he thinks the war is over immediately. Also, the line “Glad from a world grown old and cold and weary;” have a internal rhyme of “world”, “old”, and “cold”.
The third sentence also had the spirit of the poem,  it think it is a relief for fighting on the field because of the boring life when it is peace, they want a rock to hit the peace water surface to make life more interesting.
the line “And the worst friend and enemy is but Death” shows the contempt the author feels against death and war.
