This article introduces a famous mythological place in more detail than presented in the related post about Mini Sagas. The place in question is the fabled lost city of Atlantis. As stated in the Mini Saga post, Atlantis was famously described by the Greek (1)______________ Plato. It was the home of a perfect civilisation but was eventually deluged and disappeared under the sea. This (2)_______________ of a “lost” island subcontinent governed by an advanced, utopian society holding wisdom that could bring world peace has captivated dreamers, poets, occultists and pseudoscientists alike. However, there remains no (3)________________ that such a place ever really existed. The absence of scientific (4)_______________ supporting the existence of Atlantis has not stopped people searching for it and numerous real world proposals have been put forward for its underwater (5)___________________, but the (6)______________ is severely lacking.

Of more interest, perhaps, is the (7)_______________ that the idea has had on the arts, and it continues to do so. In the Mini Saga post, for example, I (8)_________________ that Atlantis is the setting for the much of the very recent blockbuster movie version of DC Comic’s Aquaman. According to this modern working of the legend, Atlantis is (9)_________________ in the North Atlantic Ocean and represents a highly advanced (10)_______________ society. Curiously, these supposedly highly (11)_________________ Atlanteans resolve disputes through combat to the death, which seems rather at odds to modern (12)__________________ of advanced civilisation. This civilisation, highly civilised or otherwise, is apparently divided into twelve distinctive (13)_________________ which may represent the twelve signs of the Zodiac. There is also a recent animated spin-off of the DC Comics take on Atlantis – LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Aquaman – Rage of Atlantis (which my kids love). In this version, Aquaman has lost his mojo, he is  humiliated on national television and no longer respected. Incapable of defeating his foes, he finds himself the lame duck of DC’s Justice League.
