I have the exact same feeling as you describe. I’d simply assumed that the caviar I tried must have been too cheap or something but I find it unlikely. I guess it is one of those strange occurrences where the cost of the status far outweighs the value of the experience – kind of like much of the fashion industry.

I recommend a vaguely related specialty called ‘Gentleman’s Relish’. It sounds posh like caviar but is actually anchovy paste and you can spread it on toast – delicious! Make sure you spread it very thinly because it is very, very salty.
