This raised many social issues which would be useful to discuss.
Task:
Read the following questions and write your answers in the comments box below. Also, read the responses of other students and use the ‘reply’ button to say whether you agree with them or not, and why.
Questions:
- Kavanaugh was accused of sexually assaulting Christine Blasey Ford when they were at high school; that’s probably over 30 years ago. Should a man’s career be jeopardized by a crime he committed all the way back in high school?
- If the crime is considered serious enough for an investigation, shouldn’t the FBI conduct a proper inquiry? Do you think the writer of the article has evaluated the FBI investigation fairly? How could you check?
- The article suggests that Kavanaugh’s appointment is a slap in the face for women’s rights. Do you agree with this position? Why/why not?
- The article suggests that this case is symbolic of the patriarchal structure of society in the USA and implies that it is hypocritical. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Why?
- The writer’s main conclusion seems to be that activists for women’s rights need persistence. Do you think this is a reasonable conclusion? Why/why not?
