Improving your Vocabulary

Hello! 🙂

Many students learning English as a foreign language find it difficult to learn enough vocabulary to read and write effectively. So, here are some ideas to help you improve your vocabulary in an efficient way.

  1. READ A LOT: Reading English is by far the best way to improve your vocabulary range. Read whatever you are interested in, but read a lot. filler
  2. Review the New General Service List: Of course, all English teachers know that most students do not read enough English to improve their vocabulary. That is why teachers often give their students vocabulary lists to learn. Wouldn’t it be useful if there was a vocabulary list that started with the words that are used most often and ended with the words used less often? That way, you can learn the most important words first 🙂
The New General Service List (NGSL) is that list! CLICK ON THIS LINK AND STUDY THE LEARN THE WORDS ON THE EXCEL FILE YOU DOWNLOAD. You’ll probably find that you know lots of the words already 🙂 You can find more information about this vocabulary list here. filler
  3. Learn some synonyms It is very boring if you use the same words all the time so spend some time learning some synonyms (different word, same meaning) or alternative choices of commonly used words and phrases. You can find synonyms by using a thesaurus.
  4. Academic Vocabulary: Are you ready for something more advanced? Check out my articles on the topic of academic vocabulary 🙂
  5. Learn collocations: Collocations are words that just go together. So, when you learn a new word, if you can learn the words that collocate with that word, you writing will be significantly improved. Once you know enough collocates, you will be able to write more like an expert. Experts writers in English rarely have to stop to think about a specific word. They write in phrases or chunks of language using collocations.

You can build mind-maps of related words and synonyms:
