A True Delicacy

Regarding the topic of exotic food, I have to admit that I always ensure I eat ordinary food, so there aren’t many types of exotic food for me to talk about. However, around three years ago, while visiting my grandparents in Zheng Jiang, we went to a hot pot place. This is where my curiosity overcame my discipline for eating food, and I ate what I refer to as a true delicacy. Allow me to introduce you to pig brains, which are usually served alongside hot pot.

Let me provide some context on why I ate this food in the first place. As stated above, we went to a hot pot place in Zheng Jiang, and curiosity eventually took the best of me. I was fixed upon the pig brains, and the thought of eating this totally didn’t give me cannibalism vibes or anything. After all, I had never even seen an anomaly quite like this, and I definitely had no idea at all if it was going to taste good or not. The dish arrived onto the table, and without further thought, I dug right in.

From the image on the left, I’m sure you can already tell what pig brains are like. They’re literally just human brains but smaller. Anyways, indicated by the title, these brains were absolutely unblemished. The texture of the brains looked like intestines, and as I took a bite, I immediately thought of tofu. The brains totally didn’t have a fishy taste to it or anything. As I’m totally extremely good at tolerating spice, the spicy hot pot soup really brightened the experience, not to mention the additional peppers. I would also like to mention my taste buds were temporarily disabled because of the intense heat of the soup, which was extremely pleasant.

In conclusion, this meal was truly the meal of all time. The taste, texture, and overall vibe of pig brains is something you can’t find anywhere else. Highly recommended.

  1. I can tell your sarcasm in this peculiar writing. At first thought, I thought you sort of enjoyed it, but once you look closer, you’ll find that it is filled of exquisite sarcasm. I can see your distaste of pig brains under the positive writing.

  2. Ah! I know it! I also have a story about pig brains in hotpot. There was a hotpot restaurant my friends and I often went to near our home in Shanghai (back when I lived in Shanghai) and we’d had our eye on the pig’s brain option for some time but never ordered it due to a degree of fussiness on the part of some of the company (not me as I’d been slurping rabbit brain out of the back of a rabbit’s skull since my earliest days in China). Anyhow, on this one occasion, a friend of mine from Belgium was leaving China, so to make sure he didn’t miss out, we ordered the hotpot pig’s brain. I think the experience was more or less the same as you describe, except I found the texture even slimier than tofu – a little bit like very ripe durian perhaps, but without the fragrance?
