Seminar 2 reflection

In seminar 2 I haven’t speak much, because I’m a little bit “shy” to speak to the whole class, however I got points to say in this blog:

How far should we respect foreign ways of doing things that we may find abhorrent?

for this question my opinion is that mI think we should try to understand and accept foreign cultures as much as possible. We can learn a lot from them and broaden our horizons. At the same time, we should also stick to our own principles and not obey our beliefs.

What if the foreign ways cause harm? Should we respect the culture or try to change it?

If the foreign ways of doing things cause harm, I think we should try to understand why they exist in that culture first. Maybe they have their reasons and purposes. But, if the harm is really serious and go against our values, I think we should try to change it, or at least let people know about the harm it causes.

If someone is offended by our actions, should we take responsibility to try to avoid offending them?

If someone is offended by our actions, I think we should definitely take responsibility and try to avoid offending them in the future. After all, we don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings or make them unhappy. We can start by apologizing to them and explaining our reasons or intentions behind our actions. Maybe we didn’t mean to offend them, but our actions still caused harm. It’s important to be honest and sincere when apologizing. Also, we can try to learn from this experience and be more careful in the future. We can think about how our actions might affect others and try to avoid doing things that could potentially cause offense.

  1. All clear except for this: “we should also stick to our own principles and not obey our beliefs.” I’m not sure what that means.

Thanks for sharing! A pity you didn’t share you ideas in the seminar. Please think of strategies to overcome your shyness.
