Seminar2:” When in Rome, should we do as the Romans do?”

We had our seminar on May 27 and 28, that’s our second seminar, we took 3 lessons to finish it, more of us got involve in the seminar. Due to the Science activities on Friday, I miss the preparing lesson(ALSO! I can’t open the link on managebac, even though Elaine sent it to me the screen shot at midnight, but I was alreday asleep◉‿◉. When I saw it, was already the next morning), so until the seminar started, I’m still bit confuse with our topic (*O_o) |Because it was too long time ago, so I can’t remember much(^_^;). |

“When in Rome, should we do as the Romans do?”

It’s a good question for you to think about before you are going to an other place for whether a short trip or stay there for a long term. Do we HAVE TO adapt to their lifestyle or culture? In my opinion:

If it ‘s a short trip, then there’s NO NEED for us to adapt to there culture and lifestyle. But if you want to, then you can definitely have a try, different life styles and cultures can bring you special and new experiences that you maybe never knew before. BUT, if you are going to stay there for a long time, then it’s not only just about your own preference. At least don’t get yourself in troubles due to those different lifestyles or cultures. Be respect to others culture( don’t be DISRESPECT to their culture), even though you don’t really understand. Of course, you might adapt to how they behave without intention, that you don’t really paid attention, but you changed because people around you were doing the same thing. For me, adapt to different culture doesn’t means “you are disrespect to your own culture”, it’s just a way for you to learn about the world and how others behave.

Also it’s based on our moral, if you can accept others doing things that’s not the way you are doing it, then you can choose how you behave in others place; But if you can’t accept others doing things different with you, then you have to follow their rules, because if you can’t accept them to break your rules, then you have to be respectful to their rules or follow their rules.

From another perspective, we are also locals, and we should follow our rules while also playing a supervisory role, when other people came to our place and throwing garbage everywhere, we should stop them, we can just let others damage our environment.

There were also other questions, but I can’t remember very much,  so I want to talk about questions below:

“How far should we respect foreign ways of doing things that we may find abhorrent?”

We can keep it in a special area or just in their own country. They can act whatever they want in their own country without breaking the laws, so when we are in their country, we need to be respectful. At least don’t be DISRESPECTFUL, you need to act normal even though you don’t agree with them.

“What if the foreign ways cause harm? Should we respect the culture or try to change it?”

we should stop spreading them, because it caused harm so it’s not a culture that we can learn improvement, but we can learn from the process of changing it. Also because it’s a culture, even though it causes harm, but it has been last for a longtime, so it’s not a thing you can change by saying it’s not good. You can only change it when the people follow that culture realized it’s not good to doing that as a foreigner.

“If someone is offended by our actions, should we take responsibility to try to avoid offending them?”

If it’s a proper action without breaking the law, then they might have to stay away from us; Or if it’s not proper action, then we have to do it some where else that won’t affect others. It really depends on where you at, as I said in the previous paragraph, you can act how you want without breaking the laws, so if others came to your country and felt offended, then it might not be a good place for them to stay(¯﹃¯).

“Should local problems be ignored as being none of the visitor’s business, or do visitors have a responsibility to help solve local problem when they travel?”

Visitors don’t have the responsibilities to solve local problems, visitors might came here for a rest, if they HAVE TO solve local problems that will disturb their holiday, trip. But if we( as a visitor) want to, then we can try to interpose, but you have to be clear with why there’re problems, otherwise you might cause more problems! Which is not helpful for both you and locals.

As a final summary: Well, even though it’s still not as good as I expected, but I think I did improved compare to the last one, I guessed I spoke more(emmm, but not too much – _ -). For the next seminar,  I’m going to take notes! Because I can’t really remember all of them, and take note will help me more efficient when I’m writing my next seminar reflection.(._.)

  1. Your ideas are clear,  thanks for sharing 🙂

Taking notes is a good idea, but many students find it difficult to both make notes and participate in the seminar.

There are a few grammar errors in your writing, but nothing very significant.
